Ooty Lake is the classic in-town activity — paddle and rowboats through eucalyptus-lined water. Pykara Lake, 20 km out, is the quieter alternative with pine forests around the boating point.
Tip: Skip Ooty Lake mid-day at weekends; go before 9 AM. Combine Pykara boating with the Pine Forest stop en route.
The UNESCO-listed heritage railway. The full Mettupalayam → Ooty leg uses a steam locomotive on the steepest section. Most travellers do the shorter Coonoor → Ooty (or reverse) leg, about 90 minutes of tea-slope views from a heritage rack-railway carriage.
Tip: Sit on the right side travelling up. Book about a month ahead — the Coonoor stretch sells out.
Avalanche Lake sits inside shola forest with easy trekking, birding and fishing loops around it — permit required, arranged on your behalf. For a harder day out, the Doddabetta and Mukurthi treks are the standard picks on our adventure segment.

Part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve — elephants, tigers, deer and gaur. The morning safari is the one worth the drive; the afternoon slot delivers far fewer sightings.
Tip: Stay overnight at Masinagudi for the dawn safari — a same-day round trip from Ooty means starting at 4 AM.
A full leaf-to-cup walk-through — plucking, withering, rolling, grading — ending at a tasting counter with single-estate Nilgiri teas. This is the honest counterpart to the toy train: history and craft in one stop.
Tip: Buy your tea directly at the factory — fresher and cheaper than the market stalls on Charring Cross.
The Ooty Lake perimeter has a dedicated cycling track for a gentle in-town ride. For something longer, our adventure segment lists guided forest cycling tours in the belt around the town.
Tip: Do the lakeside track before 9 AM to beat picnic crowds. Forest tours need pre-booking with the operator.

The Botanical Gardens span 55 acres of rare orchids, fossilised trees, Italian-style terraces and a tribal Toda settlement inside — plan two hours. The Rose Garden holds 20,000+ varieties across terraced beds. Both peak April to June.
Tip: Photograph the Rose Garden in morning light. Time the Botanical Gardens with the annual Flower Show weekend in May.
Doddabetta is the highest peak in the Nilgiris and delivers the classic Ooty panorama from the telescope house at the top. For a second, quieter viewpoint day, head to Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock on the Coonoor side.
Tip: Doddabetta at sunrise is crowd-free and cold — carry warm layers. Coonoor viewpoints close in on afternoon mist; go before noon.
Ooty shopping is concentrated on Commercial Road, Charring Cross and the Tibetan market. Eucalyptus oil, tea, chocolate, spices and woollens are the honest picks; a lot of the rest is generic hill-station kitsch.
Tip: Bargain at the Tibetan market and street stalls. Buy eucalyptus oil only from Forest Department or cooperative outlets.

Ooty Lake is a 100-year-old artificial lake ringed by eucalyptus, with paddle and rowboats run out of the boathouse in town. It is the most photographed activity in Ooty and also the most crowded — the honest recommendation is to arrive before 9 AM on a weekday, or skip it and drive 20 km out to Pykara Lake instead. Pykara is quieter, ringed with pine forests and pairs naturally with the Pine Forest stop en route. Both are calm-water boating; neither is an adventure activity, and neither needs advance booking.
Trekking in Ooty splits into two categories. Avalanche Lake, 28 km out, sits inside shola forest and offers easy trekking loops, fishing and birding — a Forest-Department permit is required and we arrange it. For a proper day out, Doddabetta (the highest peak in the Nilgiris at 2,637 m) and Mukurthi are the standard picks on our adventure segment, both suited to age 18+ walkers. Wildlife safari means Mudumalai National Park, 50 km from Ooty and part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The morning safari is the one worth the drive; the standard advice is to stay overnight at Masinagudi rather than start from Ooty at 4 AM. October to May is the honest window — outside that the park closes on high-rain days.

For most first-timers, the toy train ride is the answer — the Coonoor to Ooty (or reverse) leg, about 90 minutes on the UNESCO Nilgiri Mountain Railway. It is scenic, low-effort and impossible to replicate anywhere else in south India. Book about a month ahead.

The toy train yes — about 30 days ahead. Avalanche needs a Forest Department permit (we arrange it). Mudumalai safari slots fill up on long weekends. Everything else you can walk into on the day, though weekends are busier.
October to February for trekking, safari and cycling — dry, cool and clear. April to June for gardens (Flower Show in May). September for Pykara post-monsoon. July to August is the honest low season for outdoor activity, though the toy train and factory tours run through the year.
