8 Offbeat Places in Ooty — Beyond the Top 10
Real stops from our own Ooty and Coonoor itineraries — drive-by valley viewpoints, a Bollywood-shoot pine belt, a quiet reservoir. Not on the standard top-10 list, but locals fold them into every full-day loop.
Eight offbeat Ooty stops most first-timers miss: HPF view, Devil's Down, School Valley, Pine Forest, 6/7-Mile Tree Park, Kamaraj Sagar Dam, Ketti Valley and Emerald Lake. All eight appear in our real Ooty and Coonoor itineraries — none of them are on the standard top-10 places-to-visit list. Most are drive-by roadside stops on the Ooty full-day or Pykara circuit, so they add almost no extra travel time. No permits, no entry gates.
Why offbeat matters
The standard Ooty top-10 — Lake, Botanical Gardens, Doddabetta, Rose Garden, Tea Museum, St. Stephen's, Pykara, Avalanche, Mudumalai and the Toy Train — is the honest core of a first trip. But the drive between those headline stops passes half a dozen viewpoints, valleys and reservoirs that most first-timers never notice. On our real itineraries, these show up as small named stops on the Ooty full-day loop and on the drive out to Pykara. They are almost never worth a dedicated day, but adding two or three of them to an existing full-day loop turns a good day of sightseeing into a proper Nilgiris drive.
Nothing in this guide is invented. Every stop below appears in an actual package itinerary on this site or in our full Ooty travel guide. Where the itinerary description is short, we say so.
1. HPF view
HPF — Hindustan Photo Films — is a large industrial complex on the Ooty sightseeing loop. Our Ooty full-day itineraries call it out as an outside view stop: a quick roadside pause to take in the scale of the compound set against the Nilgiri slopes. It is not a walk-in visit, not a museum, not a tour — the honest thing it offers is a photograph and a five-minute stretch on a long sightseeing day.
2. Devil's Down
Devil's Down is a valley-drop viewpoint on the same Ooty sightseeing loop as HPF and School Valley. On our itineraries it sits back-to-back with those two, which is the honest way to visit — a cluster of three quick roadside pauses on the way to the Pykara side of the loop, not a standalone destination. Expect a five-minute stop, a wide view over the drop, and a car park with room for a couple of vehicles.
3. School Valley
School Valley is the third of the HPF / Devil's Down / School Valley cluster on the Ooty full-day sightseeing route. A valley overlook with a broad view across the slopes — quick to visit, easy to pair with the two stops before it. On our 1N/2D Ooty tour it is called out by name alongside HPF and Devil's Down as part of the same morning loop.
4. Pine Forest
Of all eight offbeat stops in this guide, Pine Forest is the one that shows up on the widest number of our itineraries — the Ooty 1N/2D quick tour, the honeymoon 1N/2D, the LuxeGlamp 3N/4D, and the family / adventure loops all route through it on the way to Pykara. It is a dense stand of tall pines on the Ooty-to-Pykara road, familiar from South Indian film shoots. A short walk in from the roadside is enough; there is no marked trail deeper into the plantation and none is needed.
The natural pairing is with the 6/7-Mile Tree Park just next to it — the two are almost always visited together on the same drive.
5. 6/7-Mile Tree Park
Named for its distance markers on the old Ooty-Pykara road, 6/7-Mile Tree Park is a cluster of wooded picnic clearings on the same route as Pine Forest. On our itineraries the two are grouped as a single named stop — “Pine Forest, 6/7 Mile, Pykara Falls, Pykara Boat House” is the exact stop sequence on the day-two Pykara-and-Coonoor package. Short walk in from the road, a few benches, and the same tall-pine feel as the Pine Forest itself.
6. Kamaraj Sagar Dam
Kamaraj Sagar Dam is a small reservoir on the Ooty sightseeing loop, closer to the Pykara side than to the town. It sits on the same day-one route as HPF view, Devil's Down and Pykara Falls, and on our 1N/2D itineraries it is called out by name as one of the loop's stops. A quiet water body with a walk along the dam wall — a genuinely calmer stop than the crowded Ooty Lake in town.
7. Ketti Valley (Kitty Valley in some itineraries)
Ketti Valley sits between Ooty and Coonoor and delivers one of the wider valley views in the Nilgiris. On our Coonoor sightseeing itineraries it is spelled both ways — “Kitty Valley viewpoint” in the 1N/2D quick tour and the honeymoon 1N/2D — and pairs naturally with Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose on the standard Coonoor loop. A quick roadside viewpoint on the way down or up between the two towns.
8. Emerald Lake
Emerald Lake sits further out from Ooty than the other seven stops on this list — it is in our Ooty travel guide rather than in the short 1N/2D loops, which is the honest tell that it needs a proper half-day rather than a drive-by pause. A quiet reservoir in the Avalanche belt, ringed by shola and tea. Best added when you already have a three-day trip and want an alternative to a second visit to Ooty Lake.

Do any of these offbeat places need permits?+
No. Unlike Avalanche Lake (which needs a Forest Department permit), all eight spots in this guide are open, roadside or drive-through viewpoints. No booking, no permit, no entry gate.
Are they suitable for elderly travellers or kids?+
Most are — they are drive-by viewpoints with short walks from the car. Pine Forest, 6/7-Mile, HPF view, Devil's Down, School Valley, Ketti Valley and Kamaraj Sagar are all step-free or near step-free from the parking. Emerald Lake sits further out and involves more driving; better on a 3-day trip than a 2-day one.
