Ooty earned its 'Queen of Hill Stations' title for a reason — lakes, gardens, peaks and tea estates packed into a 36-km radius. Here's how to spend your sightseeing days.
1. Ooty Lake
A popular boating spot surrounded by eucalyptus trees. Paddle and rowboats available. Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.
2. Botanical Gardens
Spread over 55 acres with thousands of exotic plants, a 20-million-year-old fossilised tree and the famous annual Flower Show in May.
3. Doddabetta Peak
At 2,637 m, the highest peak in the Nilgiris — panoramic views and a telescope house. Best at sunrise or sunset.
4. Rose Garden
One of India's largest, with 20,000+ rose varieties. April–June is peak bloom.
5. Tea Estates & Factory
Doddabetta Tea Factory and Tea Museum show the full process from leaf to cup. Buy fresh Nilgiri tea here.
6. Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Toy Train)
UNESCO World Heritage. Book Mettupalayam → Ooty for the full route, or Coonoor → Ooty for a shorter ride.
7. St. Stephen's Church
Built in 1829 with stained-glass windows and colonial architecture — Ooty's oldest church.
8. Pykara Lake & Waterfalls
20 km from town, quieter than Ooty Lake, with boating and pine forests nearby.
9. Avalanche Lake
28 km out, pristine and surrounded by shola forest — fishing, trekking, photography.
10. Mudumalai National Park
50 km from Ooty — elephants, tigers, deer. Morning safaris give the best sighting odds.
