Ooty in Summer — April/May Weather, Flower Show & Packing Guide
12–22°C while the plains touch 40°C. Bloom season, Flower Show weekend, long daylight — a single-month-band deep dive.
Ooty in summer (April–June) sits at a cool 12–22°C even when the plains hit 40°C. The Annual Flower Show falls on the third weekend of May, school-holiday demand peaks and packages start around ₹9,900 per person — book 6–8 weeks ahead and pack light layers, not woollens.
Summer weather in Ooty
Ooty in April, May and June holds a cool 12–22°C band. Mornings are crisp and often clear; midday sun is bright but never oppressive; evenings need a light jacket. This is the defining reason Ooty is one of India's most-booked summer escapes — while Chennai, Bangalore and Coimbatore push into the high 30s and 40s, the Nilgiris stay cool enough for walking sightseeing all day.
Long daylight is the second summer-only quality: sunrise before 6 AM and daylight past 6:30 PM means a single-day itinerary can genuinely cover Ooty Lake, Rose Garden and Doddabetta without rushing. For the full year comparison, our best time to visit Ooty guide has the month-by-month view.
Why April–May is peak family season
April–May is the biggest family window of the Nilgiris year. School summer holidays across South India start in early April and run through late May. Families from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Coimbatore and further afield book Ooty (and the extended Ooty + Coonoor + Kotagiri circuit) as the primary summer escape. Mid-week is only slightly softer than weekends in this window.
The practical impact: hotel rates sit at their yearly peak, private-cab availability tightens, and the toy train's Mettupalayam leg runs at capacity. If you're travelling with kids, the family segment page and summer tours page list the itineraries built specifically for this window.
The May Flower Show
The Annual Flower Show runs over the third weekend of May at the Government Botanical Garden — one of the largest flower shows in the country. Full-bloom rhododendrons across the Nilgiris and the show itself are the two anchor summer-only experiences. Rose Garden bloom overlaps with the show weekend and rewards a slow morning visit.
If the Flower Show weekend is the specific reason for your trip, book by mid-March. Every year we get requests inside 3 weeks of the show and inventory in the Botanical Garden radius is genuinely not available at that point. Browse the full Ooty sightseeing list to plan around the show days.
Summer packing (very different from December)
Summer in Ooty is a light-layers trip — no thermals, no heavy jacket. The three things travellers most often over-pack for a Nilgiris summer are woollen sweaters, boots and rain gear. The three they most often under-pack are sunscreen, a wide-brim hat and a light fleece for the 6 AM viewpoint start.
Pack (summer)
- • Light cottons for the day
- • Light fleece or windcheater for early mornings / evenings
- • Sunscreen SPF 30+ and lip balm
- • Wide-brim hat and sunglasses
- • Comfortable walking shoes
Skip (summer, unlike December)
- • Thermal innerwear — not needed
- • Heavy jacket — a fleece is plenty
- • Woollen gloves / beanie
- • Serious rain gear (heavy showers arrive in July)
For the polar-opposite winter packing list, see our Ooty in December guide.
What to do in Ooty in summer
The summer highlights list from our internal seasonal card:
- ✓ Annual Flower Show (May)
- ✓ Tea-garden bloom walks
- ✓ Boat racing at Ooty Lake
- ✓ Cool 12–22°C climate
- ✓ Peak family-vacation window
Two summer-only anchors are worth pointing out: boat racing on Ooty Lake (calm-water conditions specific to this window) and rhododendron bloom walks in the tea gardens around Coonoor. Both fall out of the calendar the moment monsoon starts in early July.
Summer package cost
