The Ooty + Kodaikanal 5-day loop covers two of South India's finest hill stations — Ooty in the Nilgiris (Tamil Nadu) and Kodaikanal in the Palani Hills (Tamil Nadu) — in a single connected itinerary over 5 days and 4 nights.
Why these two work together
Ooty sits higher in the Nilgiris with tea estates, eucalyptus forests and a colonial hill-town character. Kodaikanal sits in the Palani range with star-shaped lakes, granite cliffs and pine-shola forests. They're different enough in altitude, landscape and feel that doing both in one trip never feels repetitive.
Sample 5-day itinerary
- Day 1 — Arrive Ooty (via Coimbatore). Easy evening at Ooty Lake / Charing Cross
- Day 2 — Ooty sightseeing: Botanical Garden, Doddabetta, tea factory; afternoon drive down to Coonoor for Sim's Park and Dolphin's Nose
- Day 3 — Ooty → Kodaikanal transfer day (long but scenic; ~8–10 hours by road via Coimbatore and Palani)
- Day 4 — Kodaikanal sightseeing: Kodai Lake, Coaker's Walk, Pillar Rocks, Bryant Park, Pine Forest, Silver Cascade
- Day 5 — Morning at Dolphin's Nose / Green Valley View, then depart from Madurai
Best base cities to fly into and out of
The most efficient flight combo is into Coimbatore (CJB) and out of Madurai (IXM) — that way you drive in one direction only. If you must use the same airport, Coimbatore in-and-out is the standard fallback, with a backtrack on the final day.
What makes this different from doing each separately
Doing both together saves one set of long airport-to-hill transfers and gives you the natural contrast between the two ranges back-to-back. It also means a single, cohesive trip narrative instead of two short weekends.
