Ooty is approximately 780–900 km from Hyderabad and is reachable by flight + cab, train + cab, or road — there is no direct flight or direct train to Ooty itself, so every option ends with a hill drive from Coimbatore or Mettupalayam.
Route 1 — Flight + cab (recommended)
Fly Hyderabad (HYD) → Coimbatore (CJB), then take a pre-booked cab up the Nilgiris. IndiGo, Air India and Vistara all operate daily, mostly non-stop.
- Flight time: ~1 hour 20 minutes non-stop
- Cab Coimbatore → Ooty: ~85 km, around 3 hours via Mettupalayam ghat
- Typical one-way airfare band: ₹3,500–₹8,500 depending on lead time and season
- Total door-to-door: 5–6 hours
Route 2 — Train + cab (or toy train)
There is no direct train from Hyderabad to Ooty. The standard combination is an overnight express from Hyderabad/Secunderabad to Coimbatore, then either a cab up to Ooty, or the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway (toy train) from Mettupalayam.
- Hyderabad/Secunderabad → Coimbatore by express train: roughly 14–18 hours depending on the service
- Mettupalayam → Ooty toy train: ~4.5–5 hours for the full rack-and-pinion route
- Total journey: typically 18–22 hours, depending on connection time
- Best for: travellers who specifically want the toy-train experience

Route 3 — Road (self-drive or private vehicle)
Roughly 14–16 hours of driving via NH 44 / NH 544 through Kurnool, Bengaluru and Mysuru, or the Dharmapuri route. Realistic only as a 2-day drive with an overnight halt, and best suited to groups travelling in their own vehicle.
- Distance: ~830–900 km depending on route
- Recommended only for groups with a private vehicle and a flexible schedule
- Not recommended for solo travellers or couples — flight + cab is faster and usually cheaper once fuel and tolls are counted
Our recommendation
For 95% of Hyderabad travellers, fly to Coimbatore and take a cab — it's the cleanest way to protect your limited holiday time. Pick the train only if the toy train itself is on your bucket list.
Seasonal note
During the South-West monsoon (July–August) and intense North-East monsoon spells (October–November), the Mettupalayam–Coonoor ghat can see brief landslide closures. Add a buffer day either side if you're travelling in those windows.
