How to Reach Ooty from Chennai — Train, Bus, Flight & Drive

Ooty is 555 km from Chennai. The route via Salem and Coimbatore takes 10–12 hours by road; flying via Coimbatore cuts that in half.

By train (recommended)

Overnight train from Chennai to Coimbatore (7–8 hours), then a 3-hour cab up to Ooty. Most comfortable combo for families.

By flight + cab

Chennai → Coimbatore flight (~70 min) + 86 km cab (~3 hours). Best for short trips and luxury travellers.

By bus

Direct AC sleepers from Chennai to Ooty by SETC and private operators. 10–12 hours. Most affordable but bumpiest.

By car (self-drive)

NH79 + NH544 via Salem → Coimbatore → Mettupalayam → Ooty. 9–10 hours. Scenic but the last 36 hairpin bends require care.
