How to reach Coonoor
Coonoor shares the same arrival gateway as Ooty — you do not need a different transport plan to base here.
- Nearest airport: Coimbatore International Airport (CJB), about 65 km / 2.5 hours by road. Every incoming Ooty flight passenger uses the same airport.
- Nearest railhead: Mettupalayam Junction, about 35 km. This is also the starting station of the UNESCO Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train — Mettupalayam → Coonoor → Ooty. Booking the Coonoor stretch a month ahead is standard.
- From Ooty by road: 19 km, about 45 minutes on a winding hill road via Aravankadu. Comfortable for kids and elderly passengers with breaks.
- From Ooty by toy train: the Coonoor → Ooty stretch is about 90 minutes on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway — scenic, easy and one of the trip's highlights in its own right.
- From other cities: Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Coimbatore and Kochi travellers typically fly into CJB or drive up via Mettupalayam — the same access route as any Ooty trip.

Top sights in Coonoor
The Coonoor sightseeing circuit is small and walkable-by-car in a day. The five spots below are the honest core — anything else is a bonus.
- Sim's Park — a 12-hectare botanical garden in upper Coonoor with rare conifers and seasonal flower shows. Plan for 60–90 minutes; visit in the morning.
- Dolphin's Nose — a dolphin-shaped cliff with a deep ravine view across to Catherine Falls. The drive out is part of the experience; go on a clear morning.
- Lamb's Rock — a quieter cliff viewpoint over the plains, on the way to Dolphin's Nose. Easy to combine with the same trip.
- Highfield Tea Factory — a guided walk through plucking, withering, rolling and grading. The most photograph-friendly working-tea-factory tour in Coonoor.
- Tea-estate walks — slow morning trails through bungalow-era estates surrounding the town. This is the Coonoor experience most travellers remember.

The tea-estate character (why Coonoor feels different)
Ooty's landscape is dominated by eucalyptus, shola forest, market squares and lake-side activity. Coonoor's is dominated by working tea. Sim's Park sits inside the town, but a 15-minute drive in any direction puts you on estate roads with rolling green tea bushes and the occasional bungalow. Practically, this changes the shape of your day. In Ooty, an average day is 3–4 sights across the town circuit. In Coonoor, an average day is 2 sights plus a long slow walk or a leisurely tea-factory tour.
